During his amateur career, Ricardo excelled and represented the University of Central Florida and was a part of the victorious European team in the 2014 Palmer Cup.

In 2015, he had two victories and was ultimately being named the Challenge Tour Number One.​
​
As a rookie on the European Tour in 2016, he made a lasting impression, becoming the highest-ranked Portuguese player in history and finishing an impressive 54th place on the Race to Dubai. His standout moment was a third-place finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player.
​
Additionally, he proudly represented Portugal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
​
In 2021, Gouveia won twice on the Challenge Tour at the Italian Challenge and Made in Esbjerg Challenge, earning a second place on the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings, which led to his return to the DP World Tour for 2022.
